Making Sense of a Car Subscription

3 min reading time

Learn more about the benefits and the perks of the car subscription ownership model, with a comparative contrast to traditional leasing and financing.

Subscription models have become increasingly popular across nearly every industry today. From digital streaming services like Netflix, to meal delivery services and other types of physical product subscriptions, anything goes. Recently, OpenRoad Auto Group announced the launch of a revolutionary service: Portfolio — the first luxury vehicle subscription program in Canada.

For a monthly fee, customers can access a fleet of models showcased from over 9 luxury brands.

The idea is simple yet incredibly intuitive. According to their needs and lifestyle, subscribers can “flip” their vehicle up to 4 times per month, allowing flexibility and an endless palette of options. Whether you need an SUV for a trip to Whistler, or you’re simply in the mood to drive something different, this service is going to be right up your alley, pun intended.

There are two major factors distinguishing a true vehicle subscription from a traditional finance or lease style of car ownership.

Flexibility

If the need to be agile is important to you, a subscription service is a great alternative. With a true car subscription service like Portfolio, you can match your vehicle to your changing lifestyle needs rather than committing to one vehicle for a longer term. If you love a particular vehicle, keep it for as long as you want and Portfolio will make sure it still gets regular detailing and maintenance. You’ll always have a vehicle, and you’ll have the freedom to flip into something different whenever you need to.

If you work internationally or travel frequently, the subscription has minimal contractual obligations, and it can be paused at any given time. This ability to pause payments provides more flexibility than a standard lease agreement.

Convenience

A subscription service removes many of the concerns associated with traditional car ownership. A Portfolio subscription offers truly all-inclusive luxury by covering every last detail. Included in one monthly payment is vehicle insurance, maintenance, detailing, roadside assistance, and a personal concierge service to deliver your new vehicle to any location when you decide to flip your car. Portfolio handles everything on your behalf, making the membership hassle-free and creating a truly bespoke experience.

There is no question that Portfolio is a premium service, made for a premium clientele. When factoring in the flexibility and convenience along with the insurance and maintenance savings that traditional leases lack, the value of a car subscription service is clear for the modern luxury driver.

Between the Flips: Joel Schat

Joel Schat is a content creator based out of Vancouver, making videos about the outdoors, travel, and adventures. After he spent some time experiencing Portfolio, we sat down with him to get his thoughts on how the program fits into his lifestyle.

PORTFOLIO: What have you been enjoying so far about your Portfolio membership?

JOEL SCHAT: I enjoyed the ability to try many different brands of cars in a short period of time. It allows me to understand the key features and the general experience that each brand offers and compare them. Another great, practical feature is the concierge. Being able to flip cars at the end of a work day and drive home in a different vehicle is something special!

“Being able to flip cars at the end of a work day and drive home in a different vehicle is something special!”

How has your membership surprised you or surpassed your expectations?

JOEL: Portfolio surpassed my expectations with the level of cleanliness and overall detail that goes into the service. Typical car subscription or car share programs can be very hit-or-miss in regards to the overall cleanliness and newness of the cars. With Portfolio, each car still feels like it’s brand new and just driven off the lot when it is delivered to me.

What kinds of vehicle features are important to you personally?

JOEL: The most important aspect of a vehicle — for me — is the technology in the car that provides innovative features and a progressive driving experience. For example, I love the Mercedes-Benz HOLD brake function, where you hard-press on the break to hold it at a stop. I’m also a big fan of the lane assist and other driving assistance features on the Portfolio vehicles.

“I honestly couldn’t quite believe how simple and easy it was to have the first car flip arrive at my front door on my own schedule.”

Tell us about your first Portfolio car flip experience? What was your initial reaction?

JOEL: “Is this real life?” I honestly couldn’t quite believe how simple and easy it was to have the first car flip arrive at my front door on my own schedule. There wasn’t a sales process or complicated sign-up system, just the concierge handing me the keys to my car.

Tell us about how you’ve matched your flips to your lifestyle so far.

JOEL: One particular week, I planned to use my flips for a couple of things I had going on. I wanted to start the week out strong so I flipped into an Audi on Monday for my workweek commute. Then my next flip was into a Genesis for the weekend. This car made me feel younger so it was perfect for the date I had planned.

We are always passionate about hearing stories from our community. Expect to see more one-on-one interviews with Portfolio members in the near future. Who knows, the next one might be you!
